There are many ways to watch YouTube videos on you HDR TV or display. However there are also many snares you might encounter.
Using a Mac
With a Mac the process is pretty straight forward. Connect your HDR TV or display to the Mac via HDMI. Under System Preferences > Display ensure that “High Dynamic Range” is checked.
Open Safari and the URL of the video you want to play (you can also click “Watch on YouTube” on the sample above).

The little gear should already display an HDR hint. Click on it and make sure the entry “2160p60 HDR” is selected to enjoy the video with maximum color depth and resolution.
Using a Windows 10 PC
Also with a Windows 10 PC the process is pretty straight forward. Connect your HDR TV or display to the graphics card via HDMI. Under Settings > Display ensure that “Use HDR” is enabled.
Open Microsoft Edge and the URL of the video you want to play (you can also click “Watch on YouTube” on the sample above).

The little gear should already display an HDR hint. Click on it and make sure the entry “2160p60 HDR” is selected to enjoy the video with maximum color depth and resolution.
Using a Chromecast Ultra
Google sells a little device to plug into the HDMI port of your TV/display that allows you to access YouTube and to play HDR videos properly.
What doesn’t work
- The YouTube app on the current Apple TV 4K doesn’t support HDR and doesn’t support 60FPS.
- The YouTube app on LGs Web OS supports HDR but not with 4k.
